The Challenge

How do you make an exhibit about grids exciting?

Joseph Muller-Brockman was a huge contributor to graphic design and its only natural that he and his works be displayed in the Museum of Design. My challenge was to consider how do I make this something that is more than just a watch and read exhibit, something that people would actually want to come and see and have a actual experience.

Brochure flat: 11" x 5.5"

My Solution

Get the viewer to experience what its like to play with with the grid

Get the viewer to experience what its like to play with with the grid

I decided to create a interactive experience where people could come and play with the grid themselves and have a personalized poster image that they could take with them. I wanted them to know what to expect as soon as they got the ticket and be excited. The color palette is inspired by the orange cover of Muller's "Grid Systems" book and common colors he's used in his own work.

Museum ticket: 5.5" x 2"

Game box: 6" x 6" x 3". Mockup produced by Gemini AI.

The Outcome

A take home logic puzzle game

A take home logic puzzle game

After leaving the exhibit, I thought it would be great to give the customer a take-home grid systems game that they could play and have a reminder of their time spent at the museum. The game is a logic puzzle block game where the player has to put the image together based on the reference photo.
