The Challenge

How do we encourage young males to exercise?

UNICEF's initiative for their No Hunger campaign, had many sub-categories for issues they wanted to tackle, one of those being child obesity. For this project I made my target market for child obesity the demographic of black and hispanic males between the ages of 10-17 (See infographic for research). The biggest question I wanted to answer was how do I design something that would encourage my target audience to exercise enough to offset the high calorie foods they may eat that can lead to obesity?

Our Solution

Make exercise a fun and shareable experience

Make exercise a fun and shareable experience

Trading cards have been around since the 1970s and are still so popular to the point the genre has branched outside of sports and into games such as pokemon or even unconventional genres like Disney. No Pain, is a concept that makes working out effortless, fun, and most importantly FREE for the user. The idea is that they go into the app, complete their pre-determined daily workout plan and then they earn coins for their efforts which can then be used to purchase trading cards in the application. The user has the option to select what kind of trading cards they'd like to collect to best suit their interest (ie. sports, anime, or comic style). The app will not only encourage them to exercise but inform them of what each workout does for their bodies so they're also being educated about health & wellness.

The Outcome

Exercise is seen as more of a competitive sport than a chore

Exercise is seen as more of a competitive sport than a chore

Young males are typically known to be competitive, so this application would also allow them to share their results with their friends and thus encourage one another to exercise to gain the reward of more trading cards. The focus isn't to focus on their eating habits but to focus on improving their dedication to movement to offset the food they eat to attempt and decrease their chances of health restrictions due to obesity.
